About

What Is BitMods, Exactly?

A question nobody asked, answered anyway.

BitMods is a tech news and opinion site run by one person with too many opinions, a website, and an unhealthy relationship with their terminal. It covers hardware, software, privacy, AI, and whatever else seems important at the time. The bar for "important" is deliberately low.

The writing here is opinionated. If you wanted balanced, centrist, hedge-everything tech coverage, there are approximately four thousand other websites happy to provide that service. We are not one of them.

The Part Where We Admit Something Embarrassing

BitMods used to be a cryptocurrency news website.

Yes. We know.

In our defence, it was a different time. People genuinely believed that a decentralised ledger maintained by competing factions of anonymous strangers with misaligned incentives would somehow replace the global banking system. We covered it with straight faces. We regret this.

Crypto turned out to be, as best we can tell, an elaborate distributed mechanism for transferring money from people who got in late to people who got in early, wrapped in enough technical complexity to make it feel like something else was happening. In the current era of governments that increasingly treat financial privacy as a threat rather than a right, the dream of decentralised money was always going to end the way it ended. We are older now. Marginally wiser. The domain survived.

What We Actually Believe

Technology is neither good nor evil, but the people deploying it often have very clear preferences about which one to aim for. We pay attention to that gap between what tech is sold as and what it actually does when it lands in the real world.

We are generally pro-privacy, anti-surveillance, suspicious of centralised anything, and deeply unimpressed by governments that treat their citizens as a data source to be mined rather than people to be left alone. This is not a political position. This is just reading the news.

We also think AI is genuinely interesting and most coverage of it is genuinely terrible, oscillating between breathless hype and existential panic with very little useful signal in between. We attempt to do better. Results may vary.

Who Writes This

Presently: one person. Possibly more in future, if the site generates enough revenue to make that a conversation worth having. At time of writing it generates enough revenue to cover approximately nothing, which is a trajectory we are actively working on.

We are not a media company. We are not VC-backed. We do not have a content strategy deck. We have a text editor, a server, and the conviction that someone should be saying this stuff without wrapping it in seventeen layers of editorial caution.

Contact

There is no contact form because contact forms attract people who want to offer guest posts about blockchain SEO opportunities, and we have suffered enough. If you need to reach us you will figure it out. You're reading a tech blog - you know how email works.

BitMods has been wrong before and will be wrong again. We will own it when it happens, which puts us ahead of most of the industry.
